Lifestyle: TUMBLR

Hello Friends!

Today for another lifestyle post I wanted to talk about Tumblr. If any of you don’t have it, it’s a blogging website that focuses on media like pictures, gifs, videos, music and audio posts, texts etc. Whatever blogs you follow show up on your dashboard, and you can reblog from them as well as search and comment and all that jazz. Another cool aspect of this website is the archive button. I’ve had a Tumblr since right before my freshmen year of college, so when I click the archive button it shows me a smaller image version of everything I have been blogging that month. You can go back to previous years, so today I thought I would screen cap my April archive posts from now back through 2011 and put them here! I notice with my Tumblr, depending on what i’m going through in life, my posts and reblogs reflect that heavily. It’s like a mini diary.

It’s interesting to see what TV shows, movies and music I was interested in at this time for the past 3 years. It’s also interesting to see what’s the same. History does repeat itself, guys! Looking back at the royal wedding, to a clear Marina and the Diamonds obsession, to inspirational quotes to get my through tough times… it’s a lifestyle throwback indeed! Reminds me of April favorites as well.

I would highly recommend everyone get a Tumblr and start blogging your interests. It’s a great way to reflect.

Have a good week :]

Lifestyle update: HOBBIES!

So, being that this is a lifestyle blog, I thought that I would clue my followers into a few of my active hobbies lately. This is actually a funny topic because if you sit down and have to write out what you do for fun, it really makes you see what kind of person you are. I have come to the conclusion that i’m kind of… sort of… super lame! With that being said, here we go!

Lately my obsessions (a mix of old and new) are the board game Settlers Of Catan, the TV show Game Of Thrones, the card game Cribbage, and cold press coffee with a shot of vanilla in it from the Blue Heron cafe in Winona, MN!

1. Settlers Of Catan-

BEST. GAME. EVER. If you are unfamiliar, it is a strategy game of settling and trading resources to achieve victory points. There are multiple versions of the game (recently played the sea farers adaption and let me tell ya, it was a whirlwind) but we typically just play the normal one as a house. My roommates and I love nothing more than playing this game at least once a day. I highly recommend it! WARNING: MAY CAUSE TENSION AND RUIN FRIENDSHIPS.

2. Game Of Thrones-

Ok. This one is a little stupid but a little great. I still am unsure as to how I feel about this show… it’s filled with incest and lying and weird sex scenes and murder but I keep wanting to know what happens next! I’m getting kind of attached to the characters now and have decided by unpopular opinion i’m team Lannister. I know. Get your pitch forks ready. IT’S SO GOOD THOUGH! (Season 4 just started on HBO this past Sunday, so commit to it and get watching!)

3. Cribbage-

Recently my friend Josh taught me how to play and this is my newest favorite thing. Such an old person game, but super fun. I feel like this skill will come in handy at the most surprising time… so i’m glad i’ve started mastering it. I want to get a cool themed board of my own. Pug themed perhaps! I think YES!

4. Cold Press Coffee-

This is the one i’m excited to share with you guys! Cold press coffee is my obsession. Not to be confused with iced coffee, there is a difference! What is cold press you ask? Let’s ask our BFF Wikipedia:

Cold brew or cold press refers to the process of steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for an extended period. It is also sometimes referred to as Toddy coffee which is a trademarked cold brewing system.

The cold-press process requires grinding: coarse-ground beans are soaked in water for a prolonged period of time, usually 12 hours or more. The water is normally kept at room temperature, but chilled water can also be used. The grounds must be filtered out of the water after they have been steeped using a paper coffee filter, a fine metal sieve, aFrench press or felt in the case of the Toddy system. The result is a coffee concentrate that is often diluted with water or milk, and can be served hot, over ice, or blended with ice and other ingredients such as chocolate.”

Ooooahh! Sounds delicious right? IT IS! The cafe downtown Winona I always get mine from is the cutest, and the coffee is so good it requires no milk or anything added. Pick a flavor shot and you’re ready to roll! Go get one of these immediately!

Alright friends! That’s it for my hobby update! Have a good week ❤

New York is home to some of the modeling industry’s most sought after women, and Karlie Kloss has been taking the streets by storm. 21, 6’1”, and fabulous, Kloss has been busy as ever this season walking in the ready to wear shows of the fashion world’s biggest designers. Her presence on the runway is strong and bold, but what has her street style been like?

Comfortable and fabulous is the name of her game in 2014. Staying warm in the NYC weather, Kloss’s style embodies casual chic to a T. Long coats, black boots and jeans are staples in her wardrobe like the outfit she wore leaving the Michael Kors Fall 2014 RTW show at fashion week. Kloss kept things on point by pairing a snake print Kors bag with black ankle boots, dark jeans and a warm but trendy sheepskin coat.

Basics are a key part of her street style. While out in SoHo shopping on February 2, Karlie sported another casual ensemble of jeans, a grey hoodie, black boots and a black pea coat. Pulling things back to her natural but chic ways, she threw a black turtleneck under the hoodie to tie the whole look together. If you want to be comfortable with a hint of class, this is how you do it ladies!

When Kloss does choose to dress things up, basics are not tossed aside. Black capes, leather trousers and cashmere scarves are must haves in her wardrobe, with her hair never straying far from loose waves or a sleek pony tail. You wont see heels on this tall beauty when out on the streets of NYC; you can count on basic flats or boots in, you guessed it, black!

Tom Ford Nudes

One of the best things about the color nude is that it isn’t strictly seasonal. A good nude can be worn in every season, when done appropriately! Tom Ford is a celebrity favorite that has extreme quality, color pay off, and glamour. Here are a few of my winter to spring nude picks from his beauty, polish, and eyewear line. High-end pieces are great to complete your makeup collection for days you want a little luxury in your life!

1:  Nail Lacquer, Sugar Dune – Tom Ford Beauty $32
Pair this nude with light colors for a fresh spring inspired look, or pair with a dark jeans and a sweater to keep things winter chic.

2: Ultra Shine Lip Gloss, Sugar Pink – Tom Ford Beauty $45
More of a pink toned nude, great for adding a little color to a dark smokey eye or bronze makeup look.

3: Lip Color Sheer, In the Buff – Tom Ford Beauty $49
A beautiful nude that everyone needs in their collection. Wear it in the spring with a sundress for the ultimate weightless look.

4: Ultra Shine Lip Gloss, Naked – Tom Ford Beauty $45
The perfect pale nude for any look. Pair it with just mascara for a beautiful natural everyday look.

5: TOM FORD Angelina Sunglasses – $380
A splurge for the girl who loves sunglasses. Beautiful when paired with all colors. Gold jewelry and a nude lip would go perfect with these large frames.

Happy splurging.

The Look For Less: Kardashian Edition!

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny the Kardashian’s have a taste for what’s hot in fashion. From vintage Moschino to Tom Ford looks straight off the runway, you can bet one of the 3 sisters of reality TV’s most loved and hated family has it first.

Kim Kardashian’s post baby body is better than ever, and she has been showcasing a much lighter style in the past few months. While having dinner at Hotel Costes in Paris with Fiancé Kanye West, Kim sported a high-wasted PVC pencil skirt by Tom Ford. Pairing it with a simple white tee and suede Azzedine Alaia heels, the look was fresh, crisp, and perfect for an evening in the city of love!

Kim’s peachy Paris ensemble totaled somewhere around $2,200.00 total. Want to create the look for less? Here are some fashion swaps that are just as cute, and won’t break the bank!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye go out for dinner

Kim’s white tee is easily swapped with one of your choice. Try this TOPSHOP roll pocket crop tee for $20.00 for a young but stylish vibe.

This look is all about the skirt. The PVC material gives a unique shape to the body and the light that reflects off the material gives a glamorous feel to even a simple white tee-shirt. Kim went with a Tom Ford piece that was straight from the runway, totaling around $1,396.00. Swap it out for this Castalia nude patent leather skirt for $127.00 instead.

The heels in this look are a celebrity favorite right now, the Azzedine Alaia suede circle sandal. These retail for around $760.00. To complete your recreated look, try these Zara leather wide heel sandals instead for $80.00. The functionality and quality will be wonderful, and it has the same strappy vibe as Kim’s.

Achieving your own Kim Kardashian inspired look without spending all of your savings is possible! After recreating the look with these pieces, you save around $1,973.00 without sacrificing a bit of glamour. Whoever said magic isn’t real CLEARLY never learned to bargain shop.

Hair Care Diary

Today a dear friend of mine asked me a hair question, and my explaination ended up being pretty long so I thought it was something I should blog about for you guys! This my hair routine, hair history, and hair future (hopefully)!

History of my hair:
First off, let me say my hair is EXTREMELY curly. With curly hair, comes a different texture than most other hair types. Rougher, thicker, and frizzier are the words to best describe a curly head. Along with my curls, my natural hair color is a light ashy brown I would say. Nothing too exciting there.
My freshmen year of college, I decided to chop it all off and go blonde. Now, let me just say I foiled it to close to bleach blonde in stages, which was the healthiest way to do it at the time. I absolutely loved it. But, coloring your hair  blonde consistently every month or so for 3 years really takes a toll on the texture, ends and overall strength. Though I loved this color, I lost 70% of my thickness, my ends were horribly broken, and my hair overall was just not doing super well.
I think we all have that crazy spur of the moment LET’S DYE MY HAIR TODAY moment, and last year, I sadly had that and dyed it dark brown from my bright blonde, single process. Needless to say, the terrifying term single process ended up looking as scary as it sounds. I hated it, missed the blonde immediately, and went back for foils 3 days later. The hair looked better and felt better, but was still very damaged. Luckily in my spur of the moment idiocy I dyed it a demi permanent, so it lighted a little, and with the foils was ok.
Since then, I have been growing my hair out, not coloring it, and letting it get healthy again. I eventually would love to go blonde again, but it’s just too damaging for my hair right now. The color I have is growing out giving me a semi ombre effect, or balayage as my hair friends would say. In the mean time to keep my hair looking good, feeling good and on the road to recovery, these are my every day/every week products.
I wash my hair every other day. I have oily roots, so it is a must to keep me from looking ratchet. But, if you can go longer between washes, DO IT! The less washing the better. When I do wash my hair, I get out, let it towel dry for about 30 minutes, and then apply the following:

  • It’s a 10 Leave In Conditioner Plus Keratin. *note, keratin can be very bad for the hair if used too often. It can overly protein the hair and cause MORE breakage. MY hair soaks it pretty well without breakage, but that’s just mine! Be careful with your keratin amounts!
  • Aveda Color Conserve Daily Color Protect. I don’t use this everyday cause it’s expensive, but I try to throw it in 1 to 2 times a week or every few washes.
  • An oil of some kind. This is essential for curly headed people like me to smooth things down, help soften ends and give them a better look, and moisturize the hair. I like using Biosilk or Moroccan Oil.  Biosilk can be used on dry skin as well, so though it’s expensive, it’s worth the price!
  • Redkin Anti-Snap. This was recommended to me by my BFF and Aveda graduate Erin, and I use this every few washes to help with the breakage or more commonly when my hair is going through a rough period.
  • For days when I want to use a mask, I usually lean towards Lush Handmade Cosmetics products, or a coconut oil and egg white mask.

That is my normal hair care routine to help my hair recover enough to color it again! In March it will be a year since my last color, and it still has a long way to go but is starting to look and feel 10 times better than it was. I try to get my hair cut every couple months as well, but let’s be real, who has time for this every 2 weeks crap? No one. No one I know at least… :]

There you have it friends! I hope you found it helpful.
Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Self Worth, Adversity, and Routine.

Happy Sunday Friends!

Today I wanted to go a little more on the serious side of things, and talk a little bit about self worth. It’s something that a lot of people struggle with at times, and we all can question when certain life events take place.

As humans, we are creatures of habit. We go through the motions of our day to day lives, and we come across people on a consistent basis. Psychology itself tells us that just the mere repeated exposure of these people will lead us to like them, but I think this plays a bigger role than we tend to realize when it comes to our interactions with these people. Breaking change is hard. Having the confidence and courage to stand up for yourself in the face of adversity can wear on a persons mind and soul. We come into situations where we stand between a rock and a hard place because someone we see in our everyday lives is treating us badly, and we ask ourselves how to handle the situation. I have been seeing lately that more often than not, people tend to make excuses for these negative people in their lives because it is easier to justify than to stand tall. Not for lack of wanting to, more so because we see these people so often and become so accustom to having them in our lives that we can’t see the other side of things. If we were to stand up for ourselves and not accept the negativity, what would that be like?

I want to challenge the people in my life, the people of the world, anyone needing this right now to stand up and not accept anything less than you deserve. No one in this world has the right to make you feel less than 100% worth it. Your feelings matter, your thoughts matter, and more than that the actions of OTHERS matter. People never have the right to treat you with disrespect. It is ok to set a bar, and hold people to it. It is ok to only accept the best for yourself, and to remind yourself that you deserve anything your heart can dream of. The only way to achieve is to push through adversity. No matter what kind it is.

I am a lover of people with kind hearts, people with great minds, and people who do their best. Remember to do your best in times of struggle, and to not fall down in the face of routine. Remember we get comfortable, and we let that be an excuse to not accept the very best. People come and go in life, but your mind, your body, your well being is forever.

Stand up and be great you guys. Always remember there are people in your life who are standing in the bleachers cheering on your every move. Believe it.
